Which calculator do I need?
- Buying a car? Use the auto loan calculator. It handles the parts that make car loans tricky: trade-ins, money still owed on your old car, sales tax and fees.
- Comparing personal loan offers? Start with the APR calculator. A loan with a lower rate but a big origination fee can cost more than one with a slightly higher rate and no fee.
- Any other fixed-rate loan? The loan calculator works for any amount, rate and term, and shows how extra payments shorten the loan.
- Thinking of a loan to pay off credit cards? The debt consolidation calculator compares the loan with keeping your current debts.
- Buying a home? See our mortgage calculators.
Three numbers to compare on any loan offer
- The APR, not just the interest rate. It includes certain fees, so it's the fairest way to compare lenders.
- The total you'll pay over the life of the loan. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but usually raises the total.
- The monthly payment, checked against your budget. Make sure it still leaves room for savings and surprises.
